Unboxing the Dyson V11
When the Dyson V11 arrived, I was impressed by how much they were able to pack into a relatively small package. Opening the package revealed the vacuum cleaner, a connecting shaft, several attachments, a mounting station, a charger and the Torque Drive head.
At first all these parts looked pretty scary. But with the help of the user manual, I had the vacuum cleaner fully assembled in a few minutes.
The next step was to charge the machine. Since I live in an apartment (where it is strictly forbidden to drill holes in the wall), I just chose to plug the vacuum directly into the wall charger. But the vacuum cleaner comes with a mounting plate if you prefer.
How the Dyson V11 works
Start by selecting your desired power mode: Eco, Auto or Boost. Eco is for longer cleaning projects and ensures you get the most out of your battery. Auto mode is an intermediate setting that helps your vacuum automatically adjust its power when you switch between floor types. And Boost - an intense cleaning function that sucks even the most thorough dirt and grime. To switch between power modes, simply press a button on the vacuum cleaner's LCD screen. (Yes, it's that fancy).
Once you have selected a power mode, you start the vacuum cleaner by holding down the trigger. This design takes some getting used to. At first I thought I was doing something wrong because the vacuum shut off when I let it run. But in retrospect, this feature helps preserve your vacuum's battery life as it uses power only when you're cleaning. (Unlike a standard vacuum cleaner that runs until you turn it off).
How we tested it
The cleaning test:
Wooden and tiled floors
First I vacuumed the wooden floors in my apartment in Eco mode. I was impressed (and slightly scared) by how much dust and hair the Dyson picked up. I consider myself a pretty clean person, but this machine had a lot more power compared to the vacuum cleaner I used previously. And since I didn't have to worry about plugging it in, I could move the vacuum into hard-to-reach areas I'd never been able to reach before, like under radiators. This was just one of those places I didn't vacuum but should have.
I had to empty the vacuum cleaner container twice when vacuuming my small one bedroom apartment. Practice! But luckily the process was super simple. I disconnected the machine from the axle, pulled the open bin opening over the bin and clicked the bin back into place.
A few weeks later, after an unfortunate incident with breakfast in my kitchen, I tried the Dyson on my tiled kitchen floor. Once in Auto mode it picked up most of the pieces and after five moves the floor was completely free of crumbs. The power of the torque head did send some larger pieces out into the corners, but they were easy to find and soak up on the second try.
I will admit that vacuuming my kitchen made me nervous. Because the Dyson V11 uses such advanced technology, even small amounts of water can damage the vacuum cleaner. I am careful to only clean my kitchen floors when I am sure there are no wet spots from washing dishes or rinsing vegetables. I also avoid the bathroom completely.

Carpets and carpets
To really stretch this vacuum's legs, I took it to my parents' house, which has carpet, hardwood, and tile floors. My mother was initially skeptical - she usually changes the settings between each floor type - but instantly fell in love. The Dyson did just as well on carpet as it did on wooden floors, vacuuming up a canister full of dust, hair and dirt. (And my mom is more accurate with her vacuuming than I am!) The only drawback? On certain settings it was a bit difficult to push on the carpet.
I also used the Dyson to clean up a plant that fell on my carpet. In just one go, all the dirt and grime was gone. It was as if the dirt never happened! I had to be careful vacuuming near the edges though, as the Dyson tries to vacuum up the carpet itself.

Furniture
I also tested the hand vacuum attachments on my couch. At first I accidentally connected the wrong attachment, but the machine quickly alerted me with a warning on the LCD screen. After correcting my mistake, I put the vacuum in Boost mode and worked my way around the furniture. In less than five minutes it was free of crumbs and as clean as when bought. Update on Dyson V11
I've been using Dyson's V11 Torque Drive Cordless Vacuum for over two years now - and I still love it. I have moved to a larger home with wooden and tiled floors, and the Dyson V11 keeps dust, dirt and other dirt away. Plus, it still runs and charges like the day I first opened it! The only signs of wear are some marks on the Torque Drive head.
Oh, and my mom is officially a convert too. She bought a Dyson V11 to pick up dog hair that my sister's golden retriever leaves behind. After all, Dyson is known in the industry for making one of the best vacuum cleaners for pet hair.
