Antonio Puig
Antonio Puig founded a company bearing his name back in 1914 in Spain. The company is international, but still 100% family owned. It is concentrated on the production of beauty and perfume products. The year 1940 marked the first turning point in the company - since the fragrance Agua Lavanda Puig was launched. The company's headquarters were moved to the center of Barcelona and remained there until today. Antonio's four sons joined their father's business and gradually inherited it. Two of them concentrated on perfumery, one on diversification and one on institutional relations. It was in the 1960s that the house began to work on the keys to the company's future expansion. A team of skilled people capable of valuing a family-owned business was formed. It improved the quality of the products by building perfumery and cosmetics laboratories. The company also collaborates with other laboratories on research and applies industrial design to their products. Puig worked on internationalization and opened the first overseas division in 1959 in the United States. The collaboration with Paco Rabanne started and a perfume factory was founded in Chartres, France.
A decisive event in the 1980s was signing the contract with Carolina Herrera to create and market all her fragrances. The success of her perfumes spread to the fashion industry and the company began producing Herrera's fashions. At the end of 1990, one of the first celebrities to create their personal fragrances, Antonio Banderas, formed an agreement for production with Puig. The company's business grew more and more, and they set out to acquire even more brands and expand the portfolio of their products. They moved on with Nina Ricci in 1998.
Perfumes, cosmetics and fashion were brought together in a holding company called Puig Beauty & Fashion company in 1999. The running of the company was taken over by third generation members and some non-members who participated in decision-making processes. After closing deals with several popular Spanish brands, Puig closed one with Comme de Garcons to distribute and create their products. Puig also worked on the development of cosmetics and perfumes for Prada.
Another successful collaboration with a famous artist started in 2008 with the worldwide star Shakira. The company developed a line of new signature products inspired by and created for the singer. It is in 2009 that the company changed its name to what it is today – simply Puig. A licensing agreement was signed with Valentino to launch their new fragrance. One of the most recent successes was acquiring a majority stake in the fashion house Jean Gaultier.
