Givenchy Paris was founded in 1952 by Hubert de Givenchy, who just a few years after founding the company had become one of the biggest and most talked about fashion designers. Hubert de Givenchy already moved to Paris at the age of 17 to start as an apprentice in a couture house while studying at art school. In 1947 he worked side by side with the French couture designer, Lucien Lelong's, two assistants Pierre Balmain and Christian Dior, who at that time had not become the iconic and highly respected designers they are considered to be today.

A unique friendship between Givenchy and Audrey Hepburn

In 1952, Givenchy finally opened his own store and launched his debut collection. The collection quickly achieved great success and caught the interest of prominent people and celebrities. In 1953 he met Audrey Hepburn, whom he subsequently dressed in Givenchy designs on several occasions in several of the actress' films. This was the beginning of a lifelong friendship between Givenchy and Audrey Hepburn, who was also his muse and main source of inspiration.

Inspired by her good friend, Givenchy created the first perfume for women in 1957, Givenchy L'Interdit. Two years later, the first men's perfume was created, Monsieur de Givenchy. In 1969, 10 years later, the range was further expanded with the first ready-to-wear men's collection, Givenchy Gentleman.

In 1988 Givenchy Paris was taken over by the group LVMH Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy group, which today also owns Dior, Fendi, Celine, Kenzo, etc. Hubert de Givenchy chose to retire in 1995 and appointed John Galliano as the fashion house's new chief designer. Subsequently, several skilled and recognized fashion designers have been responsible for the luxurious Givenchy collections, such as Alexander McQueen, Julien MacDonald, and Riccardo Tisci, who is now creative director of Burberry. Today, Clara Waight Keller is the external face, as the first female chief designer of the French fashion house.

Givenchy had dedicated his first perfume, L'Interdit, to his good friend and muse, Audrey Hepburn, who also put a face to the perfume on the outside. Audrey Hepburn and Hubert de Givenchy had developed a strong friendship since their paths crossed in 1953, when parts of the Givenchy collection were loaned to Hepburn's film Sabrina.

Givenchy L'Interdit celebrates the story of the friendship between Hubert and Audrey. L'Interdit means "forbidden", and symbolized elegance and reluctance. The perfume was initially created exclusively for Audrey Hepburn, but the scent was made available to the rest of the world later.
