LOEWE began as a collaboration between leather merchants in Madrid in 1846. In 1872, the German entrepreneur, Enrique Loewe Roessberg, consolidated the workshop under his name, thus creating one of the world's first luxury houses. As LOEWE took shape and grew larger and larger, it was a flair for modern design that became the house's trademark. In the 1950s and 1960s, LOEWE was even internationally recognized for both its design expression, the architecture and the furnishings, which were designed by Javier Carvajal – one of the key figures in architecture in Spain at the time.

The well-known anagram on many of LOEWE's products was designed by Vincente Vela back in 1970 as a sign of the brand's material and technical superiority and skill. It represents an abstract composition of four L's. The first ready-to-wear clothing collection was launched in 1965 and was so well received that fashion quickly became a central focal point for LOEWE. Later in 1975, the iconic and exclusive Amazona bag came on the market. In addition to the successful production of leather goods, LOEWE also threw itself into the production and release of perfumes in the same decade.
