Molton Brown was established more than 40 years ago as a hair salon, and has since become one of England's leading exclusive brands within cosmetics and wellness products. The name Molton Brown is a mixture of the street name South Molton Street, where the first store was located, and the fashion store Browns. Charles Denton is the name of the man who helped make Molton Brown the recognized status symbol we know today. By 1989, Molton Brown was a standalone store in South Brown Street. Hotel manager Charles Denton fell in love with the store's atmosphere and products. He was surprised that Molton Brown's well-being products and make-up were not better known, and after a chat with founder and owner, Harvey Collis, he decided to start working for Molton Brown. His role was to spread awareness of Molton Brown as a luxury brand within well-being and skin care, among other things in the hotel industry. He set about branding Molton Brown for hotels as a very exclusive brand. As Molton Brown became a more visible brand in both hotels and in finer restaurants, Molton Brown's hand soap in particular gained a reputation for being a lifestyle statement. After a cooperation agreement with British Airways, Molton Brown also began to market in retail - still as an exclusive brand with a focus on luxury. The customers embraced it.

Later, Harvey Collis took over the company until it was sold to Japan's Kao Coreporation in 2005.
